PSA: Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE up for pre-order today, release date still unknown

In case you took a pass on that Sprint-branded GNex or the LG Viper 4G in order to wait it out for HTC’s EVO 4G LTE, well, now’s the time to get your wallet ready and unleash the cash. As promised, The Now Network has the LTE-friendly EVO priced at $199.99 (50 bucks less on Wirefly) with a beloved two-year contract, while those ineligible for an upgrade will have to shell out around $550. That being said, chances are you won’t get to surf those Long Term Evolution waves when you get device, but at least you’ll be all set once the rollout finally commences. While Sprint’s yet to give an official release date, Wirefly (somewhat reliable in the past) does say the ICS / Sense 4 slab will be shipping on May 18th. Be sure to hit either of the source links below to get your pre-order on.

Update: And just like that, Wirefly’s May 18th date has mysteriously vanished. What does it mean?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

The Olympus TG-1 is the company’s latest rugged camera, the successor to last year’s TG-810. And though the rugged aspects of these cameras may have hit an innovative plateau, there’s always room for improvement when it comes to image quality. That’s why Olympus packed a lens with an F2.0 aperture into this durable 12-megapixel beast. More »

Bryce Harper Steals Home Against the Phillies [Video]

  • Posted on May 8, 2012 at 5:41 am

Yes, ESPN announcers: Bryce Harper is only 19 years old.

In the bottom of the first inning of last night’s nationally-televised game, the Washington Nationals rookie sensation was hit by a pitch from Cole Hamels; made his way to third base on a single by Jayson Werth; and then sprinted for home when Hamels threw over for a pickoff attempt at first.

Harper successfully completed the most exciting play in baseball, marking the first stolen base of his eight-game career. It was rather awesome. Watch now:

Let’s face it, working out is not fun. Those of you that think it is, are just crazy because working out has fried your brain. For us normal (aka lazy) folks, we know the real truth. Working out is never going to be as much fun as sitting on our LazyBoy recliner watching The Game [...]

Screen Grabs: Are agents on Fringe flashing their Google Wallet?

  • Posted on May 8, 2012 at 1:21 am

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

Screen Grabs: Are agents on Fringe flashing their Google Wallet?

We’re not sure exactly what the FBI’s standard issue kit consists of, but we imagine it has more than a few bits of secret tech. These screen grabs from this week’s Fringe, however, would have us believe that the rogue agents like to pick up their tabs with what looks like Google Wallet. We can clearly see a Sprint-branded Galaxy Nexus being used to for a not-so-undercover financial transaction. At least it looks like the agents might have had an upgrade since we last saw them around these parts.

[Thanks, Te-je]

Space Shuttle Enterprise arrives in NYC atop a Boeing 747 (+video)

  • Posted on May 7, 2012 at 7:59 am

Earlier today, NASA’s Space Shuttle Enterprise touched down in New York City, where it will find a new home in the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

NEW YORK, NY ??Space shuttle Enterprise, the prototype for NASA’s storied orbiter fleet, is now a New Yorker.

The original test space shuttle, Enterprise flew into the Big Apple?on Friday (April 27) atop a modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet. The air- and spacecraft duo touched down at New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport at 11:22 a.m. EDT (1522 GMT) following a photogenic flyover of some of the metropolitan area’s most famous sights, including the Statue of Liberty and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, which Enterprise will soon call home.

Enterprise, mounted to NASA’s Shuttle Carrier Aircraft?(SCA), took off from Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. at 9:39 a.m. EDT (1339 GMT).?The nearly two-hour flight had been delayed for several days due to weather concerns.

The ferry flight marked the first time Enterprise had been airborne in more than a quarter-century. The prototype orbiter ? which never flew in space but was used for a series of approach and landing tests in the late 1970s ? had been a part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s collection since being flown to Washington in November 1985. [Photos: A Space Shuttle Called 'Enterprise']

On April 19, Enterprise was replaced?at the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., by Discovery, NASA’s most-flown space shuttle. Friday’s flight to New York began Enterprise’s journey to the Intrepid, a converted World War II aircraft carrier, for its permanent display.

Enterprise’s final landing was witnessed by an audience of 1,500 invited guests, including New York state and local elected officials. A brief handover ceremony between NASA and Intrepid staff was to be held at the airport. The space agency already turned over Enterprise’s title?to the museum last December.

Now on the ground in New York, Enterprise and the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft will remain mounted together at JFK until NASA can move and set up the two large cranes that joined the two vehicles in Washington. Once separated, Enterprise will be parked in an airport hangar for several weeks.

Hot pace, talented field for 138th Kentucky Derby

(AP) ? Bode Baffert has never been so nervous about a race. The 7-year-old son of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert is the namesake of the 138th Kentucky Derby morning-line favorite, Bodemeister.

“Bode feels a lot of pressure right now,” Baffert said. “I said, ‘Isn’t it exciting, Bodemeister’s going to go to the Derby?’ And he said, ‘Well, what if he loses?’

“You never know, but at least you have a good horse named after you. He didn’t know what to think of it.”

Bodemeister, at 4-1 odds, is among a 20-horse field that’s so stacked that unbeaten Gemologist, trained by Todd Pletcher, is no better than third choice on the morning line behind Union Rags.

“History tells us that you can’t throw anyone out,” said Pletcher, a former Lukas assistant who is also starting El Padrino. “There have been some winners the past few years that have been way down everybody’s depth charts.”

Still, just because the odds are big doesn’t mean there isn’t some serious contenders like I’ll Have Another at 12-1 or, at 15-1, Take Charge Indy, who will leave from the No. 3 post with jockey Calvin Borel, a three-time Derby winner.

“This is the best bunch I’ve seen in a long time,” four-time Derby-winning trainer D. Wayne Lukas said. “I was out there riding next to some of them, and let me tell you, this is a hell of a group.”

Some of the strongest contenders ? Hansen, for example ? have had the most success running at or near the pace. But their task is complicated by the presence of speedster Trinniberg, who could prove to be enough of a pest on the front end to compromise any horse willing to keep pace with him.

If the early fractions in the 1 1/4-mile race are fast enough, it could set up well for a deep closer like Dullahan, Daddy Nose Best or I’ll Have Another.

Baffert, who has won the Derby three times and also has long shot Liaison in the field called it “one of the toughest Derbys I’ve been in probably the last 10 years.”

Baffert has a new outlook on life after a medical scare in March when he was hospitalized with a heart attack in Dubai.

Bodemeister, ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, goes into the starting gate staring down 129 years of Derby history. The last horse to win without racing as a 2-year-old was Apollo in 1882.

“I’ve brought some really good horses here, and they were the best horse, but they got beat,” he said, referring to Lookin At Lucky, the 2010 race-day favorite who was trapped on the rail and finished sixth. In 2001, his heavy favorite, Point Given, wound up fifth.

Union Rags, the 9-2 second choice ridden by Julien Leparoux, is the best horse trainer Michael Matz has brought to the Derby since he won with undefeated Barbaro in 2006.

“I was lucky enough once,” he said. “It’s hard to believe you can get lucky twice.”

Matz trains the strapping colt for Phyllis Wyeth, the former steeplechase rider who was paralyzed from the waist down in a 1962 car accident and gets around in a wheelchair. She is married to painter Jamie Wyeth, whose father was renowned Andrew Wyeth.

Gemologist, undefeated in five races, is trained by 2010 Derby winner Pletcher, yet he’s been overshadowed by the other entrants since arriving late in Louisville on Tuesday, getting most of his training in Florida.

“He’s done everything he could possibly do,” Pletcher said, “but part of it might be because the 2-year-old races he ran in weren’t the Breeders’ Cup races. He was a little late in developing.”

Two of Gemologist’s wins came at Churchill Downs.

Hansen is a standout on looks alone. The colt is nearly white and his outspoken owner Kendall Hansen tried to doll him up by having his tail painted blue for the Blue Grass three weeks ago. The track stewards didn’t approve and neither did trainer Mike Maker.

Nine horses are expected to start from November’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile that Hansen won by edging out a hard-charging Union Rags, proof of the depth of this field.

“It’s amazing how well the major contenders have held their form,” trainer Steve Asmussen said. “It’s a very competitive race, and there are some very good horses.”

Like Baffert and Pletcher, Asmussen has two horses in the Derby ? Daddy Nose Best and Sabercat. He came close last year when Nehro finished second to Animal Kingdom.

“It is definitely on the bucket list,” Asmussen said. “I like my horses, love how they’re doing, feel that they’re going to run real good Saturday, but have no control over everybody else.”

Trainer Graham Motion, jockey John Velazquez, and Barry Irwin, who heads the Team Valor ownership group, shared last year’s win with Animal Kingdom. They return with 20-1 shot Went the Day Well, trying to become the first connections to repeat since 1972-73 when Riva Ridge and Secretariat prevailed.

Then there’s the weather.

Saturday’s forecast calls for a high of 86 with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. The Derby day temperature has topped 80 degrees just five times since 1969, when it hit 87.

Making it feel subtropical is the humidity, which was close to 70 percent on Friday. The heat combined with humidity affects horses in different ways. Some sweat profusely; others handle the elements. All Derby horses will be examined by vets on race morning.

“The hot weather may be to our advantage,” said Mark Casse, who saddles 30-1 shot Prospective. “There are some hot-headed horses in this field that it could hurt. My horse stays calm and cool.”

Post time is 6:24 p.m. EDT.

Trinity Mirror must re-grow digital business after CEO's exit …

  • Posted on May 6, 2012 at 1:15 am

The staff and some leading shareholders of one of the UK?s leading news publishers have got their way ? Trinity Mirror CEO Sly Bailey will leave the company after 10 years by year?s end.

In the group, which has downsized during the industry?s profound contraction, Bailey?s total ?1.7 million salary package had become a bugbear to its local newspaper reporters, and leading shareholders were due to vote against her remuneration at next week?s AGM.

Although Trinity Mirror has, like all publishers, lost core circulation and advertising revenue, it has barely moved the dial on its digital business performance, which last year was below even 2008 levels.

?We level the blame at Sly Bailey and the directors ? they conditioned people in Britain to expect free content,? the chief reporter of Trinity Mirror?s own Media Wales, Martin Shipton,?said last year, decrying ?the greedy pursuit of unsustainably high profits?.

Still, the company?s statement announcing her exit claims: ?Importantly, Sly has also established the basis of a digital strategy for the Group going forward.?

Amongst Bailey?s last acts had been reorganising the publisher?s digital leadership last year. Mirror.co.uk traffic fell after a site redesign.

Bailey?s exit will lighten the wage bill at Trinity Mirror, which has downsized its headcount from 8,000 in 2008 to 6,000 in 2011.

Magazine publisher Future also jettisoned its CEO, Stevie Spring, in October in a cost-saving exercise.
